New Recreation Center is coming to Widefield Parks and Recreation

We are excited to be moving forward with plans to build a new recreation center. After soliciting feedback from a facility expansion committee made up of community stakeholders and holding informational meetings at several schools across the district, we have completed conceptual plans for a new recreation center to be built on the main campus of Widefield Parks and Recreation located at 705 Aspen Drive. In collaboration with Architects LKA Partners and Nunn construction, we have spent the past several months working on the facility details during the design and development phase. Final design plans will be submitted for permits in the coming weeks. If materials are available as expected, we plan to start construction mid-March of 2022 with an estimated completion early May of 2023.

The new recreation center and surrounding area will have new and improved features for the community to enjoy. The campus will see improvements and expansion of current parking lots, roadway changes, and on-site stormwater. The new facility will be approximately 65,000 square foot. The first floor will include a gymnasium containing three full-size basketball courts, dividing curtains, storage rooms, and a suspended walking track around the interior perimeter; two community meeting rooms with a kitchen; a child watch/preschool area, with storage, and teacher work rooms; an administration area; and men’s and women’s locker rooms. A second floor will include two exercise rooms, outdoor exercise deck, cardio, fitness and weight areas with staff offices. A subsequent future phase will convert the first floor general storage to family changing rooms and add 13,860 square foot for a lap pool and zero entry recreation pool.
Funding
Construction is expected to cost $22.5 million.
  • $17 million in certificates of participation (COPs) bonding
  • $5.5 million from the Widefield Parks and Recreation general fund
The debt service to pay back the COPs will be paid from:
  • Annual $1 million general fund transfer
Impact of Construction
During the twelve month construction period, our campus will see several impacts. Parking lots, road ways, and sidewalks will have changes and improvements. This will make the campus easier to navigate and more accessible. Unfortunately during construction, some areas will be closed off and parking will be limited. The new recreation center and campus roadway improvements will allow us to better serve the community needs in the future. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.
We invite you to visit our Facility Expansion webpage for the most up to date information on the new recreation center.
